Welsh Minister for Rural Affairs visits The Firewood Company

Elin Jones, Welsh Minister for Rural Affairs and Ceredigion AM came to view the production operations at the Firewood Company in March this year. Elin was invited to view the Penllyn Estate Farm by owner John Homfray, chairman of the CLA in Wales to see how farms can benefit from diversification. Naturally she visited The Firewood Company to see how diversification of the farms premises has allowed other local businesses to grow and flourish on the farm estate. She chatted to Director Ewart about our firewood and the opportunity to supply the Welsh Assembly Senedd with our lovely biomass woodchip. As Ewart explained it is important to recognise that wood is only a sustainable product if more trees are planted. They discussed the Assembly’s exciting proposals to plant 100,000 hectares of new woodland in Wales over the next 20 years! This means that there is a real future for our product and the environment and we as a company fully endorse this!

The Renewable Heat Incentive – payment scheme for using green heat

The forthcoming RHI will be operational in 2011, similar to Feed-In Tariffs for electricity; it makes payment to households and businesses that use green methods of generating heat. This includes Biomass boilers! If you have a biomass boiler heating your home or business you may be eligible for annual payments from the scheme which runs for 10 years. These are designed as an incentive to install energy efficient heating into your home and therefore make it financially attractive to do so! The RHI will be funded by a levey or tax on consumers using fossil fuels. The price of fossil fuels will rise.

The RHI has recently held a public consultation on the policy which proposes to exclude wood burning stoves from the scheme. The Firewood Company responded to this with several comments in summary:

"We feel it is necessary to clarify the definitions of at what point a wood burning stove becomes a hand-fed wood fuelled water heating system. When creating greater clarity in these definitions we would urge for the wood burning stoves of sufficient efficiency which provide domestic or business buildings with sole heating, or majority water heating (along side for example solar thermal or electric emersion) to be included in the scheme. In doing this, the scheme would also be indirectly helping to phase out the use of coal as a multi-fuel in domestic burners.

As the scheme progresses and a Sustainability Standard for bio-fuel is established further criteria can be set for the use of accredited fuel. The addition of wood burners (under circumstances outlined previously) could be phased into the scheme as this accreditation roles out UK wide which would give the wood burning stove and wood industry time to adapt and build on its current infra-structure."

We will keep you updated as to progress with the RHI and would like all our customers to be able to benefit from the scheme as we see sustainably sourced firewood as a renewable resource which assists in reducing this countries reliance on fossil fuel and in reducing our carbon footprint.

Expansion continues for South Wales largest supplier of firewood

2010 brings further expansion, increased wood production, increased storage facilities for our seasoning wood and further additions to our delivery fleet. This means our firewood team has also expanded. In 2009 The Firewood Company began its largest expansion to date and began a stepped increase to firewood production. This increased the quantity of firewood we are able to produce and means we now have seasoned firewood available all year round. We increased our capacity for customer collection and many customers took advantage of hiring one of our trailers to take their wood home.

Whilst expanding firewood production we have also expanded the range of products we sell to include Gransfors Axes, log baskets, wood stores and ecofans.

1 July 2009

The Firewood Company is the first Company to Wales to be awarded the HETAS Accreditation for its seasoned Firewood.

In July 2009 our seasoned firewood became HETAS Approved under the Solid Biomass Assurance Scheme. This is very exciting as we are one of only two firewood producers in the UK to have attained this certification and the first in Wales! It shows independent approval for our firewood and has helped us to further improve our production and quality control systems. HETAS is the government recognised independent body which offers independent approval for heating appliances, services and fuels. The Solid Biomass Assurance Scheme certifies fuels that meet set criteria of relevant European Standards. It gives customers the ability to differentiate between suppliers and sets a common standard that is publically recognised. This means all of the firewood we manufacture and season has undergone rigorous quality control, and systems are in place to ensure we consistently produce high quality seasoned logs. We are externally assessed by HETAS and receive yearly audits of the manufacturing, storage, quality control and working practises of our product and business to ensure it meets the HETAS standard.

Our seasoned logs now carry the HETAS Logo
